Most traders stare at charts waiting for a breakout confirmation that shows up after the move is already half over.
LunarCrush's AltRank is designed to show something earlier: which assets are gaining unusual traction relative to every other tracked coin, measured on a blend of social activity and market performance. This post walks through what AltRank measures, how to read it inside Discover, and what today's data points at right now.
What AltRank actually measures
AltRank is a ranked score across every tracked cryptocurrency and stock. A rank of 1 means the asset is at the top of combined social and market movement among thousands of coins or stocks.
Rank moves are what matter. An asset sitting at 639 and dropping to 50 is telling you its social momentum is accelerating faster than its peers on both social and market metrics. The number by itself is less interesting than the velocity of the change.
In this Hyperliquid example, we see that HYPE saw AltRank drop twice before price movements due to very strong social activity. As price and overall market activity accelerated, AltRank stayed at a very low/strong reading.

Zooming out a bit further, AltRank helps to uncover longer-term patterns. In the case of Venice Token (VVV), AltRank picked up continually improving social activity at a time when the market activity of VVV wasn’t quite as hot. While price and trading volume were down, social metrics and overall interest were firing higher.

Reading rank alongside other social metrics
AltRank works best paired with two other metrics. Understanding other metrics, and narratives alongside market activity is both important and insightful. In this example, you can see that Zcash has had tremendous social and market growth that has closely followed one another. When AltRank and various social metrics all move in the same direction, you have three independent signals agreeing with each other. One metric can be noisy. Three moving together is a pattern.

What to look for in Discover right now
Open lunarcrush.com and sort the cryptocurrency list by AltRank. Look for coins whose rank dropped sharply in the last week or month while their Galaxy Score climbed at the same time. Cross-check social dominance against the 1-week and 1-month trend. If all three are moving in the same direction and price has not fully caught up yet, you are looking at a candidate the LunarCrush methodology considers under-appreciated.
The practical test: would this coin's name be easy to find on a sorted price-only leaderboard? If not, and the rank says it should be, you have found a setup that price-only traders are missing.
A concrete takeaway
Pick three assets in Discover this week. Write down their AltRank, Galaxy Score, and social dominance today. Check the same three numbers seven days from now. If rank has improved (smaller number) and both Galaxy Score and social dominance are trending up, pull the social post feed for that asset and read what people are actually saying. Your goal is not to guess price. It is to train your eye on what rank acceleration looks like before you see it in a candlestick.
